All About MISTAKES WERE MADE
Who?
Me. I'm Alex R. Johnson and I write things. Sometimes I direct things. I used to produce things, but then I realized I could feel like shit from my OWN creative endeavors, thank you very much.
What?
I needed a place for my non-screenplay, non-novel writings. There used to be these things called magazines. Also independent weeklies. They were great and had Life in Hell and Zippy the Pinhead and Tom Tomorrow, but also they had essays about life from grumpy people of various ages.
Why?
Because I made the mistake of writing an essay for Talkhouse about the joys of going to the movies alone, and I realized I rather enjoyed pondering, writing and sending that piece out into the world. But there aren't really many places to send things, anymore.
When?
Probably monthly? I can kinda guarantee it won't be more than that. But if I do send more than one a month it's probably for a really important reason and you should be thrilled to receive it.
How?
How much? Is that what you mean? It's free. I'll put a tip jar or some such 'Buy me a Coffee' nonsense on the site once I finish watching a video tutorial teaching me how to do that neo-captialistic heavy on the humility widget type shit.
Can you do the Who, again? With some actually thought put into it?
I will. I'll even put it in the third person for some gravitas.
Johnson’s feature film TWO STEP premiered to critical acclaim at SXSW in and went on to become a New York Times Critic’s Pick, as well as remaining 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
His debut novel, BROOKLYN MOTTO is out now. Sam Lipsyte called it “…a stylish, propulsive mystery that beautifully captures late '90s New York City in the convulsions of enormous social and economic change.” Alex Abramovich says it’s “…Raymond Chandler by way of Lou Reed…”
His screenplay NORTHEAST KINGDOM was selected for the 2016 Studio Black List. It was acquired by Paramount Pictures for Platinum Dunes to produce, with Johnson attached to direct.
His screenplay ANY ROUGH TIMES ARE NOW BEHIND YOU was selected by the Austin Film Society’s Artist Intensive lab. There, he spent three days working one-on-one with late director Jonathan Demme, an experience that was as inspiring as it was creatively life changing.
Recently, he wrote the screenplay adaptation of Ernest Tidyman’s novel, BIG BUCKS, for Pascal Pictures.
Prior to writing and directing, Johnson was a seasoned NYC based commercial and documentary producer. He started his career at the legendary Maysles Films and then branched off to work with other directors.
In 2010, he produced the feature documentary I AM SECRETLY AN IMPORTANT MAN for filmmaker Pete Sillen.
Johnson's family hails from the Andes of Ecuador, where their 100-year-old dairy farm still operates. A government brat (his father was a career FBI agent and his mother an analyst for the CIA), Alex was mostly raised in the suburbs of DC.
He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
